EL LUGAR QUE HABITAMOS – Una visión existencial -------------------------------- THE PLACE IN THAT WE INHABIT – An existential view

 Dr. José Martínez-Romero Gandos
Noviembre 2015.

THE PLACE IN THAT WE INHABIT – An existential view
Dr. Jose Martínez-Romero Gandos
november, 2015.

Where do you live? It would be a good answer: - "I was born in this world. I have been here since that time". Different would be the response if they were asking: "You where does inhabit? "
We live in a territory but we try to be considered something more than "to be occupants of a housing" or "to occupy a site". Nowadays the Sociologists say that "we build and construct because, before, we inhabit".
Our abode, to live in a house, to live in a certain geographical space supposes " an foundation act and a founding belief". It is the fact that there inhabit a site the real planner, the real builder of a space and social living, unable to live isolated because nobody lives so separated of oneself and his social environment.
The process of integration of the human being to a territory takes place in the shape of "rooting" (to settle itself, to be established, to be fixed to a place) with the condition of understanding this fact as a sociocultural total space.
We say " I am from Buenos Aires ("porteño"), or " I am from Córdoba" (Argentine) or  "I am from Rosario ("rosarino")", all under protection of the same State. And if I am from "Galicia" ("gallego"), "tano", "turk" or "carioca"?. We are interested about rooting, which obeys to a pluridimensional series of components that integrate individual, society and culture, together with the spatial and temporary coordinates.
" To be an "porteño" (from Buenos Aires)" (or any other nature of being) it means man's identification with a site, in a space-time with a few social certain characteristics and a specific culture. This rooting also depends on the participative structures, on the different groups, on the varied organizations and on all those who feel involved, shaping what we call the " local community ".
It is not possible to construct megalópolis or polygons without links with the environment, with a local history and with a certain society.
The "inhabitant" take part of an axioloxical and normative frame that comes determined by the society, identifying with this norm. Opposite case traverses the risk to remain in the anomia.
With a simply didactic intention we will say that rooting can be: a) a rooting that is product of a community of blood, a " domestic rooting "; b) a local immediate rooting (neighbors, neighborhood, municipality, local community); c) an urban rooting (the city as frame of reference and living together, for example " I am "porteño" (from Buenos Aires)”; d) a national rooting and, finally, e) a cultural rooting.
The house and the habitat must be "lived", "dreamed", "imagined", since without these dimensions the reality appears as lack of sense. The enjoyment for the chosen site does not reside only in what is received but also in what is shared. There is a dialectical game between "the house" and "the community". Also between " the house" and "the universe".
The current man take distance of all that, in the past, the ancient city's founders had generated, tending to develop "megalópolis", dissociated of the authentic "inhabitant", breaking the links with the nature, separating of the persons by one wrong attitude and provoking the growth of the isolation and the corruption of the system.
We cannot protest if we leave ourselves to convince by "big builders " of spaces with many "modern" names (countries, urbanization, village, etc.) that there form selfish spaces, almost always closed, with utilitarians criteria, tributaries of a space of commercial exploitation and domain.
Often we tolerate the nature depredation, the natural modification of the environment and "we inhabit" in these constructions that separate us, automatically, of our natural environment. It seems that it is a matter that does not belong to us, that it is anything external to us, who constitutes a "exploitation". If we follow the etymology of the latter word we should accept that "to inhabit" in these spaces they forced us to " to be exploited, to exploiting ". They are and we are capable to arrive at one large devastation to construct outside the limits of the culture, if it is necessary, out of the own local environment, out of own history.
At this moment of globalization of the business and the communications, the borders become doubtful and the peoples generate specific behaviors to preserve his identity. This globalization provokes massive migrations if there are problems of work or production.
When the opportunities of work or professional diversification diminish, the inhabitants migrate. When the society makes easier a constant migration two very well differentiated phenomena are observed: a contact takes place with persons and sometimes with geographically and culturally distant peoples (even in a economic and social relation), and the "fellow countrymen" form an new community, perhaps dispersed in many distant places of the planet.
Rooting and uprooting, two existential potential points of reference in all the emigrants. The roots are original of every person and constitute an unique and unrepeatable sentiment. Before the sudden situation of transplant appears, many circumstances favour the possibility of "rooting", roots in a new situation that allows the growth, considering all the consequences, and "uprooting", roots that do not allow these development or leave the person in so precarious conditions that any cultural "breeze" can make ill or still kill her.
